Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven(NHS), a community-based nonprofit focused on neighborhood revitalization through affordable housing development, homebuyer education, and community engagement, seeks a Deputy Director to serve as a key part of the organization’s management team to assist with the oversight and strategic development of programs in accordance with our by-laws. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will manage daily operations in coordination with managers and directors across several lines of business.

The Deputy Director will be responsible for analyzing daily operations and production of all departments and provide insight and strategies to inspire and promote organizational growth.  The Deputy Director will also assist with the enhancement of all resource development and grant writing activity.

The Deputy Director must be committed to the goals and philosophy of NHS, and must possess a high degree of motivation.  The Deputy Director is expected to work as part of a team to accomplish common organizational goals and objectives.

Core Responsibilities:


  • Establish interdepartmental strategies of operation with other management team leaders
  • Assist fellow directors in creating measures that ensure overall organizational sustainability in terms of revenue generation and human capacity.
  • Serve as the “spokesperson” for the organization by articulating mission, vision, program objectives, and impact to the New Haven community, funders, donors, and government officials
  • Strategize with program and communications staff to create a communications plan that reaches potential clients and residents in our program areas
  • Serve as a liaison with the Executive Director, board committee chairs and the Board President. Reports regularly to the Board on program activities, the progress on specific projects, or problems encountered.
  • Coordinate fundraising efforts with Executive Director and resource development staff
  • Serve as an ambassador to maintain good public relations with community stakeholders and demonstrates program impact and accomplishments by providing information and preparing publicity materials
  • Assist with the monitoring and evaluation of programs for consistency with program objectives and community needs
  • Co-lead strategic and organizational planning with Executive Director, management staff, and Board of Directors  
  • Coordinate with the Director of Finance to manage fiscal matters for the organization
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Executive Director   
  • Lead the mediation of customer disputes that rise beyond the level of the department directors.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters’ Degree in Public Policy, Business, Business Administration and Management, Nonprofit Administration, Law, Real Estate Development, or other related field.
  • 7-10 years of management experience in operations within the affordable housing industry; or
  • 7-10 years of experience leading the resource development activities of a non-profit; and
  • A minimum of 5 years leading the grant writing activities of a nonprofit organization.

or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge about lending, mortgages, real estate, home purchase process, HUD Housing Counseling and HUD Regulations

Preferred Skills Sets and Knowledge Base:

  • Strong supervisory and leadership abilities
  • Understanding of the geography and socioeconomic status of the area(s) served by the organization (New Haven’s neighborhoods).
  • Considerable knowledge of available community public and social services (e.g. legal aid, health services, employment services, etc.).
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including public speaking abilities
  • Ability to assist with raising the funds necessary to subsidize NHS’ development projects
  • Knowledgeable of real estate development and construction management
  • Ability to deal effectively with all people, especially community residents, lending officers, City officials and contractors.
