Job Title: Deputy Regional Campaign Director - Mid Atlantic & Appalachia
Department: Program
Unit: Campaigns 
Location: MD, DC, VA
Reports To: Regional Campaign Director -Eastern, 
Supervises: Senior Campaign Representative(s) and/or Campaign Representative(s) in assigned region(s).

Scope: Plans, directs and manages all aspects of National Campaign priorities for MD, DC, DE, PA, NJ, VA, WV as assigned, including Beyond Coal, Building Electrification, Beyond Dirty Fuels, and Clean Transportation for All. Responsible for the planning and direction of all staff activities and financial resources to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Campaigns as assigned. Develops strategies, creates regional work plans, establishes priorities and benchmarks, provides leadership, evaluates campaign effectiveness and manages budgets. Manages day-to-day operational aspects of regional campaigns. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public. Develops fundraising proposals and participates in fundraising activities and donor relations.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  1. Creates and implements a highly strategic regional campaign plan to advance the objective of moving from fossil fuels to clean energy. Collaborates with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapters, Communications, Organizing and Digital Strategies Capacities, Political Team, Sierra Student Coalition, Sierra Club’s programs and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated state based campaigns. Partners with other national Sierra Club campaigns and programs to take delivery on broad decarbonization efforts at the state and regional level.
  2. Manages campaign representative and senior campaign representative staff in assigned regions. Activities include recruiting and hiring for excellence, establishing priorities and assisting in work planning, preparing and conducting performance reviews, coaching and providing on-going staff development opportunities.
  3. Liaises with Chapters in the region, connecting the dots between the localized chapter efforts and regional strategies. 
  4. Ensures strategic engagement of key state/regional power generation stakeholders, state/regional elected and appointed decision makers, and executives in the renewable energy and efficiency industries to assure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities.
  5. Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion. Supports, motivates and encourages broad grassroots conservation campaigns by encouraging engagement of and providing guidance, training, and information to strategic allies and Sierra Club volunteer leaders.
  6. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to local, regional, and national conservation volunteers and staff. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
  7. Analyzes coal, gas, building electrification, transportation, energy burden, fossil fuel extraction and pipelines, and clean energy policies. Presents Sierra Club positions to the general public, media, decision makers, and strategic allies. 
  8. Manages and monitors regional campaign resources and expenses. Provides analysis and support of budget and quarterly re-forecasts.
  9. Works in collaboration with Advancement to plan and execute fundraising plan. Collaborates on creating grant proposals, donor solicitations and building donor relationships.
  10. Evaluates and reports on progress toward campaign goals and objectives; establishes metrics for campaign progress.
  11. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  12. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience: 

  • Significant experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns which includes: substantial experience with program management, planning and managing a national level campaign, developing strategy, organizing, media, fundraising, budget planning and management, and working with senior level political and business leaders.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Track record of effectiveness working in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Expert knowledge within the environmental field, which includes in-depth knowledge and background in coal, gas, fossil fuel extraction, pipelines, building electrification, transportation, energy burden and clean energy issues.
  • You model effective equity analysis and practice and have a track record of operationalizing equity, and have embedded justice and equity throughout team/department policies, structures, culture, and programs. 

In addition, it would be nice for the candidate to have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser.
  • Substantial experience, demonstrated skill and ability, in local and regional media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence and knowledge of media technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with volunteers.

Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required. A background check will be required upon acceptance of the position.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $90,000 is Salary Region 1 (e.g. NYC)

The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.

This is a category 3 exempt, non-represented, managerial position.
