Company Profile

Company Overview

ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc. is a nonprofit agency that provides prevention, treatment, supportive housing, and recovery services to individuals and families in South Central Connecticut who are affected by mental illness and/or substance abuse.

The Agency's goals are directed at full integration of clients into the life of the community, and its dedicated staff works to prevent the need for hospitalization and loss of independence during acute episodes of illness.

Company History

ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc., was created by the official merger on January 23, 2001, of two longtime social services agencies well known in the Greater New Haven area. Following an eighteen-month period of affiliation, the merger of these two respected leaders in nonprofit behavioral health services has expanded their capacity to care for those in need of mental health and substance abuse services. Together the two agencies form a complementary union that provides a range of prevention, treatment and recovery services as well as supportive housing services for individuals who are severely disabled with mental illness, substance abuse, or both. With the assistance of our capable staff, in consultation with many community partners, clients participate fully in the life of the community despite their disabilities. ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc. believes it is important to establish programs that emphasize the quality of life beyond the basics and that open the doors to individual success.

Cornerstone was originally established in 1968, to offer transitional housing for individuals with serious mental illness. Many other supportive housing services were developed over the years. ALSO was originally funded in 1978 and has provided a wide range of substance abuse recovery services, including drug and alcohol prevention, education and treatment, for more than twenty years.

As a result of the merger, ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc., has positioned itself to provide a wider range of mental health and substance abuse services for both families and individuals. Much of the service development undertaken by ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc. has been in collaboration with other service providers. In the fall of 1998, the Family Support Collaborative was created in a partnership between Cornerstone and the Coordinating Council For Children in Crisis (CCCC) to assist families in crisis so that they can remain intact, while, at the same time, protecting and nurturing minor children in these families. A year ago, the agency purchased a four-family residence to provide housing for these families. Other recent collaborations have included three PILOTS Projects (a statewide supportive housing initiative funded by DMHAS). Key agencies involved in these collaborative projects include Liberty Community Services, New Haven Home Recovery, The Connection, Inc., the Consultation Center, and Leeway. Strategic planning for other service development is ongoing at the agency.
