Company Overview
Established in 1966, Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission is to help children in need reach their full potential through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with volunteers. We work toward providing successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to better schools, brighter futures, and stronger communities for all. As an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States, NBBBS ranks among the largest 10% of affiliate agencies based on number of children served. During last fiscal year, we provided mentoring to 1,945 young people in 111 of 169 Connecticut towns including Hartford, Middlesex, Tolland, Windham, Litchfield and northern New Haven counties.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
•In September 2007, Connecticut’s Big Brother of the Year Harold Wolliston was awarded by the American Greeting Card Association as one of its “Heroes in our Midst”. This is a nationwide recognition program designed to cast the spotlight on exceptional individuals who work day in and day out to improve the lives of others.
•In August 2007, the State of Connecticut’s Latino & Puerto Rican Affairs Commission presented NBBBS, at its annual banquet, an award recognizing our outreach to the Latino community in establishing the NBBBS Latino Advisory Council, a group of volunteer leaders who act as advisors and liaisons between NBBBS and the Latino community.
•In March 2007, the Connecticut PARENT magazine featured the NBBBS mentoring program on its cover with a feature article, “Leading By Example”.
•In 2006, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America cited NBBBS for having one of the standout Latino Mentoring Initiative efforts of all the agencies implementing this program based on the number of Latino children served and the establishment of an advisory council. Nutmeg was chosen to host an “Effective Practices Session” with the Miami Florida Big Brothers Big Sisters – to share insights on reaching the Latino community.
•In 2005, Laura Green, President and CEO of NBBBS, was named one of greater Hartford’s “8 Remarkable Women in Business” by the Hartford Business Journal, a state-wide, subscription-based publication.
