Company History
The Shelter was founded in 1983 by the Greater Norwalk Community Council. A year later in April 1984, a separate nonprofit organization recognized as the Norwalk-Kiwanis Emergency Shelter, Inc. was formed. In November 1984 the name was altered to Norwalk Emergency Shelter, the current facility was purchased, and the Shelter officially opened its doors for service. Another name change occurred in the spring of 2012 to Open Door Shelter, Inc. We selected this name to reflect the fact that we serve all in need.
